How we derived these numbers

Every cost figure on this site is a planning estimate traceable to a published source or to the ISO and IAF audit-time structure. This page lists the sources, the calculator coefficients, how figures are derived, the update discipline, and the authorship behind iso9001certificationcost.com.

Section 1

Sources used

UK consultancy published rates

rkmsuk.co.uk, youriso.co.uk, isoadviser.com, candymc.co.uk, qmsuk.com and similar UK-resident specialist consultancies. Published rate guidance and fixed-price proposal ranges retrieved April 2026.

Certification body published material

BSI, LRQA, SGS, NQA, Amtivo public quote-request and capability pages. UKAS bodies do not publish standard fee schedules, so day-rate bands are planning estimates inferred from public pricing signals and the IAF MD 5 audit-time structure, not quoted prices.

UKAS register

United Kingdom Accreditation Service register of certification bodies accredited for ISO 9001:2015.

ISO published structure information

ISO 9001:2015 standard structure (Annex SL high-level structure, clauses 4 to 10), ISO/IEC 17021-1 conformity assessment requirements, ISO/IEC TS 17021 audit time guidance.

SERP and PAA scans

Top-10 organic results and People Also Ask blocks for the primary head term and 50+ long-tail variants used as editorial direction signal. Last full scan April 2026.

Calculator coefficients

Each input on the calculator maps to the output through the coefficients below. Rounding and band edges may produce small differences vs the band table on the homepage.
InputOutput coefficientRationale
Headcount bandStage 1 + 2 audit-day countIAF MD 5 and UKAS interpretive guidance key audit days off effective headcount. Up to 10 = 2 to 3 days. 11 to 50 = 3 to 4 days. 51 to 250 = 5 to 7 days. 250+ = 6 to 8 days.
SectorAudit-day multiplierManufacturing 1.15x, services 1.0x, construction 1.2x, food 1.18x, healthcare 1.1x. Multipliers applied to baseline Stage 2 days. Basis: the IAF MD 5 scope-complexity categories and typical UK consultancy scoping for each sector.
QMS maturityInternal preparation daysNothing in place vs partial documentation vs mature: roughly 2x scaling at each step downward. Imputed at £175 / day fully-loaded internal cost (£45,000 FTE plus 14 percent overhead, divided by 220 working days).
Number of physical sites+35 percent Stage 2 days per additional siteUKAS multi-site sampling rules typically reduce per-site audit time on a square-root basis but never to zero. 35 percent uplift per additional site is a working approximation.
Consultant useConsultant day countNone = 0. Hybrid = 5 to 8 days at £700 to £1,100 / day. Full = 10 to 22 days at £700 to £1,100 / day. Day rate range from independent generalist £600 to £900 and sector specialist £900 to £1,300, weighted to a £700 to £1,100 working range.
Body tierDay rate and admin feeBudget UKAS body £1,000 to £1,300 / day, £200 to £450 admin (NQA, Amtivo). Mid-tier £1,200 to £1,500, £350 to £700 (SGS, LRQA). Premium £1,400 to £1,600, £500 to £900 (BSI). 2026 published and quoted rates.

Section 3. How figures are derived

Published rates from UK consultancies are the starting point, not the answer. A consultancy publishing a £900 day rate is publishing a list rate, not the figure on the statement of work that gets signed, and a certification body publishing "contact us for a quote" is publishing nothing. Because UKAS-accredited bodies do not publish standard fee schedules, the body-tier figures here are not quoted prices. They are planning estimates built from the publicly visible pricing signals (consultancy rate cards, fixed-price proposal ranges, body capability pages) combined with the audit-day structure the standards themselves define: IAF MD 5 audit-time tables and ISO/IEC 17021-1, keyed off effective headcount and scope complexity.

Coefficients are revised when published-rate data moves materially across a band, or when a UKAS or IAF interpretive note changes the audit-day calculation. The most recent review was in June 2026; the next is expected around the autumn 2026 budget season, when UK consultancies typically re-rate.

Where the available pricing signals are thin or contested, the page that uses a figure shows the range rather than a single point. The methodology coefficients above are the only figures applied across the whole site; sector-specific multipliers on the sector pages are additive on top of these.

Section 4. What this site does not claim

  • We are not a certification body. We do not issue ISO 9001 certificates.
  • Our figures are planning anchors, not quotes. Always obtain formal quotes from UKAS-accredited bodies for your specific scope.
  • The calculator does not include remediation cost from current state to audit-ready. That is a scoping exercise.
  • We do not endorse any specific certification body. The body comparison is editorial, drawn from published rates and practitioner experience.
  • We do not claim ISO 9001 certification, accreditation, or affiliation with the International Organization for Standardization.

Section 5. Update discipline

Figures on this site update when the underlying reality changes: auditor day rate movement, standard revision, certification body merger, regulatory change. We do not bump the publication date for SEO purposes.

The "reviewed" date in the footer reflects substantive change only. When you see "Cost ranges last reviewed June 2026", that means the bands and coefficients on this page were checked against fresh source data in June 2026, not that we cosmetically refreshed the page.

Section 6. Authorship

iso9001certificationcost.com is maintained by Digital Signet, an independent compliance and operations advisory operating across the UK. Editorial responsibility sits with the Digital Signet team; cost figures are estimates derived from the published sources and the ISO/IAF audit-time structure described above, not quotes for any specific engagement.

For corrections, source disputes, or detailed methodology questions, contact the editorial team at the email address listed in the domain's WHOIS record. We respond to substantiated corrections within two weeks.
